No.51 - April 2002 | Contex HOME FROM THE CHAIR ROSE BAILLIE News in archaeology Amid the tumult of current affairs, important events are occurring in the world of archaeology. On the positive side London has recently seen the important discovery of a Roman bathhouse in Shadwell, an inscription confirming that Roman Londoners were called Londiniensi, and a writing tablet recording the sale of a slave girl. Meanwhile English Heritage are resisting the building of a 1000ft tower in Southwark that would impinge on London’s historic sky-line and SCOLA are hard at work trying to insert consideration for our heritage into the Mayor’s plan for London. The whole archaeological community is on tenter-hooks to see what will replace PPG15 and 16 and the APPAG has produced its first report with a large number of often controversial recommendations. Richard Allan MP however has a Private Members Bill underway that deserves widespread support; it would make illegal the sale in Britain of any ancient artefact that was illegally acquired in its country of origin, in Iraq for instance. |
